The gold medal Clyde Drexler won as a member of the 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team has hit the auction block.

Bidding on the medal opened Monday at Goldin Auctions with a starting price of $250,000 and will run until Aug. 17. It's the first Dream Team gold medal to ever be auctioned and includes a letter of authenticity signed by Drexler.

"In my opinion, this is the most historical award to ever come up for sale for any sport," Goldin founder and CEO Ken Goldin said in a statement. "The 1992 Dream Team is not only the greatest, but the most famous team ever assembled - this is the team that launched basketball as an international game. Now, for the first time ever, collectors have a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of the team's history."

The Dream Team, which also featured Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and Scottie Pippen, went undefeated en route to gold at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

Drexler averaged 10.5 points, 3.6 assists, and three rebounds in eight Olympic contests.
