Roberts: Glasnow's recovery 'slow-moving,' will need more time on IL
The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without Tyler Glasnow's services for longer than initially thought.
Glasnow and the Dodgers originally thought he'd only miss the minimum 15 days when he was placed on the injured list in mid-August because of right elbow tendinitis. However, manager Dave Roberts termed his recovery as "slow-moving," and Glasnow now could be out until mid-September, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.
"Not getting better," Roberts said. "He's just still not throwing free and easy. And when you're not, then you've got to kind of make some concessions and slow down the process. So, that's kind of what it is."
Glasnow's only been able to play catch since going down. He'll have to fully build back up before rejoining the rotation, whether late in the regular season or for the playoffs. Glasnow will also likely need some minor-league rehab starts, Roberts added.
"I think the coming days will be telling," Roberts said.
Glasnow was enjoying the best season of his nine-year career after being traded to the Dodgers in December and signing a five-year extension worth over $136 million. He owns the lowest WHIP (0.95) in the National League and has already set career highs in strikeouts (168) and innings (134) while making his first All-Star team.
But injuries are once again the story surrounding the 31-year-old, who's battled a litany of injuries while in the majors. This is Glasnow's second IL stint of 2024; he missed several weeks in July due to a back issue.
The Dodgers' rotation has once again been hampered by injuries, continuing a trend that's hurt the team over the last several seasons. Los Angeles currently has six starting pitchers on the IL, including Glasnow and prized rookie Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
