49ers' McCaffrey sits out MNF win, could miss Week 2 vs. Vikings
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed Monday's 32-19 win against the New York Jets.
McCaffrey got hurt early in training camp and missed four weeks of practice before returning to the field last week.
After being listed as questionable due to calf and Achilles injuries, McCaffrey was confident he'd be available for the season opener, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. He pulled himself out of Friday's workout after his calf tightened up, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who added that there's a strong possibility that McCaffrey won't be available for the 49ers' Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
San Francisco relied on Jordan Mason, who ran for 147 yards and a touchdown with McCaffrey sidelined.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that McCaffrey's calf was bothering him and that his absence wasn't the result of a setback, according to NFL Network's Omar Ruiz. Shanahan added that the ailment has improved but comes and goes.
Last season, McCaffrey tallied a league-high 1,469 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 67 catches for 564 receiving yards. Those impressive stats won the 28-year-old the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year title.
The three-time Pro Bowl tailback has racked up 6,185 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns over 91 games since the Carolina Panthers drafted him in the first round in 2017.
All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams was added to the 53-man roster ahead of Monday's contest after holding out for most of training camp in search of a new deal.
