Steve Smith fires back after Cam calls 2011 Panthers 'locker room of losers'
Steve Smith Sr. isn't happy with former teammate Cam Newton following disparaging comments he made recently about the Carolina Panthers.
Newton described the 2011 Panthers as a "locker room of losers" while discussing the pressure of being the No. 1 draft pick on "The Travis Hunter Show."
"My issue was when I was the first pick, I went into a locker room of losers. Just honest," Newton said. "Guys didn't know how to win, guys didn't know how to prepare. They didn't take themselves serious to realize, like yo, we was 2-14. There was a lot of 2-14 in the mentality of those guys."
He continued, "It was a culture shock for me because the games don't mean a lot to a lot of people in the league like you would expect. It's just money, you know what I'm saying? Not everybody has capabilities to be impact players. They're just players."
Smith, who played in Carolina from 2001 to 2013, fired back Monday on X.
"I've watched & listened from a far as U @CameronNewton talk about @Panthers!" Smith wrote. "None of us are perfect. Yes We were 2-14 before you blessed us w ur presence. The way you have talked about @panthers lately I'm very disappointed. I wish u nothing but the very best."
Newton spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Panthers, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016. He returned to Carolina for a brief second stint in 2021.
