The Super Bowl XLII championship ring won by former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress came close to setting a new auction record over the weekend.

The ring fetched $280,600 at Heritage Auctions, making it what's believed to be the second-most-expensive Super Bowl ring ever sold, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith. The current record belongs to former Baltimore Colts head coach Don McCafferty's Super Bowl V ring, which sold for $300,000 in 2022.

Burress caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Eli Manning in Super Bowl XLII to lead the Giants to a 17-14 victory over the Patriots, dashing New England's hope of an undefeated season.

The ring is accompanied by a signed letter from the 47-year-old Burress that reads, "I received this actual ring as a member of the New York Giants who won Super Bowl XLII, held Feb. 3, 2008, against the New England Patriots in Phoenix, Arizona. I further certify this ring is the one and only ring and that no duplicate copies were produced."

Burress played four seasons for the Giants, totaling 244 receptions for 3,681 yards and 33 touchdowns. He was released by the team in 2009 following a shooting incident in which he which he accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York City nightclub.
