Rockies GM thinks struggling team 'can turn it around'

Colorado Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt is confident his team is capable of playing much better baseball.

The Rockies fell to a league-worst 6-33 on the season after a humiliating 21-0 shutout loss at home to the San Diego Padres on Saturday. Colorado has a -113 run differential and is on pace for 25 wins.

"There are still a lot of games left," Schmidt said, according to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post. "I think we can turn it around, but it's going to take a whole group to do it. The guys are working to get better."

The Rockies fired hitting coach Hensley Meulens in the middle of April but are still tied for 29th in the league in runs scored and 28th in OPS.

"I feel for the fans, I feel for the people around here," Schmidt said. "I know we are better than we have played, but we are not good right now. We have to battle through it and get to the other side."

Schmidt also backed the performance of manager Bud Black and said he isn't looking to make a change.

"Guys are working hard every day, they come with energy, for the most part," Schmidt said. "I don't think we are (at that point of firing Black). Guys still believe in what we are doing and where we are headed. We are all frustrated."

Schmidt is in his fourth full season as Colorado's GM. He was promoted from the interim position after taking over following Jeff Bridich's resignation in May 2021. The Rockies haven't recorded a winning season since 2018 and are on pace for a third straight campaign with at least 100 losses.
