It's only fitting that Ryan Smyth is playing his final game in the NHL wearing an Edmonton Oilers jersey with a "C" on it.
Smyth earned a reputation as "Captain Canada" after captaining six Canadian World Championship teams during his storied career, but he was never given the letter during his initial 11-year tenure with Edmonton. Now, in his 1,270th NHL contest, Smyth is finally "Captain Oiler."
Edmonton captain Andrew Ference has not played since March 28 due to injury. He tweeted his support of the one-game captaincy for Smyth:
