Boise State holds off Arizona to win Fiesta Bowl
It was a tale of two halves for Boise State.
After all the drama, the Broncos beat Arizona 38-30 to win the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday.
The Broncos looked like they could run away with the game after an explosive first half which saw running back Jay Ajayi score a trio of touchdowns. Arizona found a way to fight back after the first-half fireworks.
With seconds remaining in the game, Wildcats quarterback Anu Solomon had his team in position to potentially tie the game and force overtime, but the Broncos defense did not allow him the opportunity, on what turned out to be the game's final play.
Ajayi, who finished with 134 yards rushing in his final college game, was supported by quarterback Grant Hedrick. The passer finished the game with 309 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His go-to target was wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck who finished with 12 catches for 199 yards.
The Wildcats, who trailed 21-0 at one point, made the most of opportunities and fought back.
Solomon threw for 335 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions, yet was in position to bring the team back. The Wildcats utilized a strong run game from Solomon and running backs Nick Wilson, who left due to injury, and Terris Jones-Grigsby. The group grinded out 157 yards on 56 carries, with two scores.
The win gives the Broncos their third Fiesta Bowl win in history. They won the bowl game in 2007 and 2010.
Arizona's two-game postseason winning streak comes to an end.
