Ovechkin 1 goal away from becoming Capitals' all-time leader
With his 50th goal of the season Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes, Alex Ovechkin joined an elite group. But with his next goal he'll stand alone as the Washington Capitals' greatest.
Ovechkin's 50th goal marked the sixth time in his career he has hit the half-century mark, joining the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossey, Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne as the only players to do so six or more times.
With goal 51 of the season, Ovechkin will pass former Capital great Peter Bondra for the most goals in Capitals history. They're tied with 472 goals each as a Capital, though Ovechkin scored his in 206 fewer games.
Ovechkin is already the franchise point leader with 891 points.
The 29-year-old will get his first shot at reaching the milestone Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens.
