Former Packers head coach Mike Sherman to coach Massachusetts high school team
Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman will be heading back to high school to coach the Nauset Warriors in Eastham, Mass.
A Massachusetts native, Sherman lives in West Dennis and has been looking for a way to get back into coaching since leaving the NFL in 2013.
"I've been fortunate financially over the years, which is allowing me to do this," Sherman told Bill Higgins of the Cape Cod Times. "Back in January I was looking for a place to have a football camp this summer, and Nauset High School came up. Then I heard they were looking for a head football coach."
"It took me a while to pull the trigger. It hasn't been an easy decision because I wanted to make sure I was all 100 percent in."
Sherman last coached in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins in 2012, after spending 2000-05 as the head coach of the Packers. He made a brief stop in college, as the head coach of Texas A&M from 2008-11, but after considering retirement, the 60-year-old couldn't pass up coaching again.
"When I came to the Cape a year ago I felt I was done in coaching," Sherman said. "I explored other outside opportunities, but I kept coming back to the fact I missed coaching. I missed the players and the preparation that goes into a season. I missed the ebb and flow, handling the highs and the lows."
"I have always admired high school coaches who give their time to their players. They have a chance to impact young lives."
