Report: Dodgers interview Kirk Gibson for managerial vacancy

A Los Angeles Dodgers legend is hoping for a victory lap with the organization.

Kirk Gibson, who famously launched a walk-off homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series for the Dodgers, has interviewed for the club's managerial vacancy, according to multiple reports.

The 58-year-old was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease this past April, but he's responding well to medication, and feels healthy enough to pursue managing again in the majors.

Gibson served as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2010-14, compiling a 353-375 record over five seasons. He also earned National League Manager of the Year honors in 2011.

The vacancy, which is highly regarded in the baseball world, is being pursued by many suitors. San Diego Padres bench coach Dave Roberts reportedly left a favorable impression with Dodgers' management after interviewing. And former Padres manager Bud Black and New York Mets bench coach Bob Geren are also on the shortlist of candidates. Gabe Kapler, the Dodgers' director of player development, has been declared the favorite to land the position, however.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman hopes to have a new manager in place no later than the baseball winter meetings in early December.
