Dana White eyeing July rematch for Rousey-Holm

Arguably the biggest rematch in MMA history will have to wait if Holly Holm's representation has anything to say about it.

UFC president Dana White has a title rematch between Holm and Ronda Rousey lined up for UFC 200 in July, telling Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times that Rousey will be the bantamweight champion's next opponent. However, Holm's management has other ideas.

In direct opposition to White, Holm's manager, Lenny Fresquez, wants his client's first title defense to be against Miesha Tate, instead.

"Holly's used to staying active," Fresquez told the Times. "We're from the old school, and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. ... (Tate) deserves a shot, but it's not for me to decide."

Pugmire also tweeted that White was standing firm on his preferred pairing for July's UFC 200:

It isn't just Tate's qualifications that have Fresquez campaigning for her. Rousey detailed the difficulties she's having in dealing with her first ever knockout loss to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN The Magazine, which has lead to further doubt as to when she'll return.

“I’m not sure Ronda will be ready for a July fight,” Fresquez said. “She took a severe beating, and I don’t think it’s in her best interest to take the next fight so fast. They told me she’s been ready and cleared, but … ”

If Rousey isn't ready, Tate has done more than enough to place herself at the front of the line. Since losing back-to-back fights to Cat Zingano and Rousey, Tate has toppled three top 10 women's bantamweights in Liz Carmouche, Sara McMann, and Jessica Eye.

That set her up for a third crack at Rousey, but she was passed over in favor of Holm. Fresquez believes Tate deserves her shot.

“Holly’s not so much about the money as (much as thinking) she wants to fight,” Fresquez said. “We’d like to fight Miesha.

"We understand there are risks, but Holly’s a dominant champion, and she wants to fight the best. Right now, Miesha is the best.”
