Thunder's Monty Williams won't return to team this season
Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Monty Williams won't return to the team for the remainder of the season, the club announced Friday.
Williams' wife Ingrid was killed in a car accident on Feb. 9.
"The most important thing for Monty during this time for him is to be with his family, and the most important thing for us as an organization is to support him as person in any way we can," Thunder vice president and GM Sam Presti said in a statement.
Williams has five children. He joined the Thunder's staff last summer after being dismissed as head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans following five seasons on the job. The 44-year-old, who also works in an assistant capacity with USA Basketball, has been told to take all the time he needs, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
Williams, who played nine seasons in the NBA, delivered a powerful eulogy at his wife's funeral, focusing on faith and forgiveness. The woman whose vehicle hit Ingrid Williams was reportedly speeding with a dog in her lap. She was also killed in the accident.
