Hulk Hogan wins $115 million in lawsuit against Gawker
Former professional wrestler Terry Bollea, who is more famously known by his ring name, Hulk Hogan, has won a $115-million lawsuit against Gawker, founder Nick Denton, and former editor A.J. Daulerio.
"Mr. Bollea is exceptionally happy. This is not only his victory today, but also anyone else who's been victimized by tabloid journalism," Hogan's lawyer David Houston said to reporters after the verdict was announced in his client's favor.
The 62-year-old will receive $55 million in economic injuries, and $60 million for emotional distress after Gawker published a portion of a sex tape in 2012 that involved Hogan and Heather Cole, who was at the time married to Bubba "The Love Sponge" Clem, a friend of Hogan's.
Gawker intends to appeal the decision, according to a statement released from Denton.
"Given key evidence and the most important witness were both improperly withheld from this jury, we all knew the appeals court will need to resolve the case," the statement read. "I want to thank our lawyers for their outstanding work and am confident that we would have prevailed at trial if we had been allowed to present the full case to the jury. That's why we feel very positive about the appeal that we have already begun preparing, as we expect to win this case ultimately."
News of the Hogan sex tape broke in 2012, after TMZ posted it on their website.
Hogan has already settled outside of court with Cole and Clem.
