Report: Dolphins' Ross names potential ownership successor
Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross plans to sell his controlling interest in the franchise to New York businessman Bruce Beal Jr. should he die or decide to relinquish ownership, according to multiple reports.
The succession plan was approved by the NFL in an effort to shore up the ownership situation of a key franchise, something all teams are now expected to do in the wake of the Tennessee Titans situation.
Ross, 75, gained a controlling interest in the Dolphins in 2009 after purchasing half the team from Wayne Huizenga in 2008 for $550 million.
This is not an indication of Ross' willingness to sell, Jason La Canfora reports, and does not guarantee Beal Jr. will be the next owner, only that he will have the first option to buy the team.
The succession plan was voted on and approved by a majority of owners during meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., in March.
