Chargers claim Zach Mettenberger off waivers
The San Diego Chargers claimed quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Mettenberger served as Marcus Mariota's backup last season, starting four games when the 2015 first-round pick was injured. The 24-year-old completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 935 yards and four touchdowns against seven interceptions.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Mettenberger started six games during his rookie campaign, throwing eight touchdowns versus seven interceptions.
Mettenberger will be coached by former Titans offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, who operates in the same role for the Chargers.
Philip Rivers is firmly entrenched as the Chargers' starting quarterback, so Mettenberger will battle against Kellen Clemens for the team's backup role.
San Diego also released quarterback Bryn Renner.
