The Philadelphia Eagles have placed running back Ryan Mathews on the non-football injury list with an ankle injury suffered during a training session last week.
The injury is reportedly a sprained ankle, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Mathews is expected to be the Eagles lead back after splitting carries last season with DeMarco Murray, who was traded to the Tennessee Titans.
The 28-year-old had 106 carries for 539 yards and seven total touchdowns last season, his first with the Eagles.
He can be activated from the list at any time during the preseason.
Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner will likely split first-team reps in his absence.
