The Pittsburgh Steelers claimed quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers, the team confirmed Wednesday.
The San Diego Chargers released Mettenberger on Tuesday after he signed with the team in May. Mettenberger was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round of the 2014 draft and spent his first two seasons there.
In his new role, Mettenberger is expected to compete with Landry Jones for the team's backup spot, as Ben Roethlisberger is firmly entrenched as the starter.
In a corresponding move, the Steelers placed backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski on season-ending injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
