Adrian Peterson has torn meniscus, but Week 3 return not ruled out

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson suffered a torn meniscus in Sunday's win over the Green Bay Packers, head coach Mike Zimmer announced Monday.
Peterson's timetable for return is uncertain, and Zimmer did not rule out Peterson playing in Week 3.
This prognosis could be considered good news for the Vikings, as Peterson's injury had the look of a season-ender. The former 2,000-yard rusher couldn't put any weight on his leg after having it twist under him on a tackle, and had to be carried to the locker room.
When Peterson returns to the field could depend on whether he has surgery to repair his injury. There are several ways to treat a damaged meniscus, including playing through the injury, trimming the meniscus (which typically comes with a four-to-six-week recovery period), or fully repairing it (which can be season-ending).
If Peterson misses time, Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata will likely share the workload in the Vikings' backfield.
