Report: Saints to bench Jairus Byrd vs. Chargers

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The New Orleans Saints will bench starting safety Jairus Byrd for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The veteran's poor performance last week against the Atlanta Falcons seems to have forced the move. He continuously struggled to tackle, allowing running back Devonta Freeman to make several big plays.

Byrd was a big-money addition in 2014, but has failed to carry over the Pro Bowl-level form he showed with the Buffalo Bills.

It's likely that second-round pick Vonn Bell will move into the starting lineup.
