Manning: Beckham Jr. brought extra attention 'upon himself'

One week after New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo told Odell Beckham Jr. that he needs to control his emotions, quarterback Eli Manning sent a similar message to his star receiver.

Beckham was given a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for his reaction to a late hit by Minnesota Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes on Monday. While the flag was questionable, Beckham's erratic behavior has become an issue for New York, as officials have begun to give him extra attention.

Manning said Beckham has brought the scrutiny "upon himself," and must play with more composure to avoid hurting his team with penalties.

"He's got to play smart," Manning said, according to Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News. "He can't afford to do anything they'll call. He's kind of brought that upon himself, so he's got to realize that … No doubt. Can't afford the penalties."

Beckham was kept in check by the Vikings, producing 23 yards on nine targets, and was kept out of the end zone for the fourth time this season.

However, the two-time Pro Bowler refused to acknowledge his past on-field actions have caused officials to keep a closer eye on him.

"There's never an explanation (from the officials)," Beckham said. "It's always it's just my fault. That's all I look at it as, it's my fault. I just have to understand if I sneeze the wrong way it'll be a flag, it'll be a fine. If I tie my shoe the wrong way it might be a fine or a flag.

"As tough as it is to understand for a 23-year-old who has been blessed with a lot - God has given me a lot of ability, amazing amount of everything - and it seems like it's all working against you," Beckham added. "But what are you gonna do, are you gonna back down or stand up? And I've never been one to back down."
