Norv Turner's son surprised to see his father's resignation from Vikings
Scott Turner wasn't surprised to be hired as his father's quarterback coach in 2014 with the Minnesota Vikings, but when Papa Norv decided to call it quits as the team's offensive coordinator this season, Scott was just as taken back as anyone else.
Scott, who has stayed on the Vikings' coaching staff, said his father informed him of his decision to step down just minutes before telling his head coach.
"I knew that he was dealing with some issues, or whatever," Scott said Friday, according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "I thought that it was a possibility. I didn't ever think he was actually going to do it, and then he told me about one minute before he told (Mike) Zimmer.
"I didn't think he was, and he said he was going to. And I said (to myself), 'Hey, he's got to do whatever he thinks is right.' I gave him a hug and then he went in there and he did it."
Scott said his father will make a decision on his coaching future after the season. Norv left the team because of opposing views on how the offense should be run, which his son can understand.
"He felt like it was something that was the right decision for him at the time," Scott said. "I don't know, I just feel like, to me, he just felt it wasn't going the right direction and he felt like the best thing for him to do was to move on."
In the Vikings' first game under new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, they lost their third-straight to the Detroit Lions, scoring just 16 points.
