Fans shout homophobic slur at Texans during kickoff in Mexico
Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports
Stemming from a tradition used during soccer games, fans in Mexico City used a homophobic chant to try throwing off the Houston Texans on Monday night against the Oakland Raiders.
When the Texans kicked off after scoring a first-quarter field goal, fans could be heard yelling "puto," a homophobic slur that has caused controversy with the Mexican national soccer team. Typically, the slur is shouted at opposing goalkeepers during penalty kicks.
The Mexican football federation has been fined multiple times when supporters have used the chant, most recently $30,600 by FIFA in October.
