The NFL's 32 owners unanimously approved a tenant-lease contract between the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams, according to ESPN's Eric D. Williams.

San Diego faces a Jan. 15 deadline to decide whether to relocate to Los Angeles for the 2017 season. Chargers owner Dean Spanos previously said he'd make a decision after the end of the regular season.

The owners also unanimously approved a debt waiver that allows the Chargers to use an undisclosed sum toward their relocation fee.

"It's Dean's option by January 15 to make a determination of whether he thinks he can make it work in San Diego, or whether he decides to take the option to Los Angeles," commissioner Roger Goodell said.

Goodell added that both parties need to continue to work toward a viable stadium deal.

"We have not made great progress in Oakland and in San Diego," he said. "There's not a stadium proposal on the table that we think addresses the long-term issues of the club that's in those communities. So we need to continue to work at it."

According to Goodell, Los Angeles is more than capable of hosting two NFL teams.

"It's a great market," he said. "We know we have millions of fans there, but it's also a challenging market. They demand to see that we're doing everything possible to put the best product on the field. I'm convinced the stadium project itself is going to be world-renowned. I think the entertainment aspect of it and the stadium itself and around it is going to be absolutely extraordinary."
