Report: Jets head coach Bowles to return in 2017

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

A tumultuous and ultimately very disappointing 2016 season won't be enough for the New York Jets to fire head coach Todd Bowles.

Bowles will return next season in the same role, Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reports, citing a team source.

The Jets will finish no better than 5-11 in a season that began with playoff aspirations following 2015's 10-6 record.

Along the way, the team squabbled with Ryan Fitzpatrick over the veteran's contract demands, spent a second-round pick on a quarterback who has yet to see the field, and saw its own veteran players argue over who should be most embarrassed over the team's mounting losses.

Bowles appeared to be firmly on the hot seat, but apparently owner Woody Johnson will stay the course and bring his coach back for a third season at the helm.
