Kyle Shanahan: My father won't have position on 49ers staff
While being the son of a Super Bowl-winning coach has been an alluring factor in the hiring of Kyle Shanahan to the San Francisco 49ers, the young coordinator doesn't plan on bringing his dad along to his new job.
At Super Bowl Opening night on Monday, Shanahan, who is still serving as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, told reporters that he does not plan on hiring his father, Mike, in any official capacity, but expects to ask him for advice from time to time.
Mike Shanahan won a Super Bowl as offensive coordinator of the 49ers in 1995 and two as head coach of the Denver Broncos in 1998 and 1999. Kyle worked under his father as offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins from 2010-13 where Mike last served as a head coach.
The 49ers announced Sunday night that John Lynch will be their new general manager. Lynch played safety under the elder Shanahan with the Broncos from 2004-07.
