Report: Eagles expected to pursue Alshon Jeffery

Mike DiNovo / USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles could reportedly look to free agency to find Carson Wentz a true No. 1 receiver.

The Eagles are expected to pursue Alshon Jeffery if the Chicago Bears allow the veteran pass-catcher to hit the open market in March, league sources told CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.

Jeffery played under the franchise tag in 2016, and it's unclear whether the Bears are willing to hand him a big-money extension.

Despite failing to hit the 1,000-yards receiving mark in consecutive seasons, mostly due to injury in 2015 and a performance-enhancing drug violation in 2016, Jeffery has a history of elite play.

The Eagles' pass-catchers had the eighth-most drops in the NFL in 2016, and the offense was routinely limited by the poor play of its receiving corps.

According to spotrac.com, Jeffery is expected to receive a contract worth $12.2 million annually on the open market.
