Report: Cutler considering early retirement

It's safe to say Jay Cutler won't play for the Chicago Bears in 2017, but it would be surprising if he doesn't play for any team.

But that's a possibility, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who said during an appearance on Wednesday's "NFL Total Access" that Cutler still hasn't decided if he will play at all this season.

"(He's) one of several veterans who are still considering whether they want to play, whether they want to not play, retire, walk away," Rapoport said. "A lot of things in play here for Jay Cutler."

Cutler will turn 34 in April. He's suffered numerous injuries in his career, including a labrum injury in 2016, but retiring at this age would be shocking.

But perhaps it's indicative of a trend among quarterbacks viewing their careers in year-to-year terms.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger floated the idea of retirement earlier this season, but he's expected to return. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer also considered retirement, then recently announced he will return.
