Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is separating himself from coaches and players who openly supported Dak Prescott as the team's starter last year, NFL Network's Jane Slater reports.

Romo suffered a fractured vertebra during the preseason and Prescott stepped up in his absence. Although some expected Romo to regain his old job without much resistance upon returning from injury, Prescott proved to be unassailable, earning Pro Bowl and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

After Prescott established himself as the new face of the franchise, Romo's been subject to rampant trade speculation, linked to the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans.

Romo reportedly felt like the Cowboys were taken away from him, believing that he was the sole leader of the club, Slater reports.

The veteran quarterback read a prepared statement on Nov. 15, noting that Prescott earned the right to be the Cowboys' starting quarterback after guiding the team to an 8-1 mark, and offered his full support amid national media interest. Romo also spoke about his burning competitive desire, while Prescott excelled on the field.
