Report: Mavs to make Romo 'Maverick for a day,' let him dress in home finale

Tony Romo's days of competing in the Lone Star State haven't ended just yet - sort of.

The Dallas Mavericks will honor the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback by making Romo a "Maverick for a day" during the team's final home game on April 11 against the Denver Nuggets, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Romo will reportedly be in a Mavericks uniform and sit on the bench with the team.

With Seth Curry out with a shoulder injury, team owner Mark Cuban had recently been hinting that the Mavericks would look to acquire a "pass-first point guard" to close out the 2016-17 campaign. Apparently, Cuban was referring to Romo, sources told Stein.

Though Romo won't actually enter the game, the Mavericks reportedly intend to treat the now ex-gunslinger like one of their players throughout the day ahead of the opening tip.

Honoring Romo in this way reportedly wouldn't have been considered had the Mavericks (32-47) been in the playoff race. They're set to finish with their first losing record since going 40-42 in 1999-00.

Romo announced his retirement from the NFL on April 4 following 156 career appearances for the Cowboys. He threw for 34,183 yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions during that span.

The 36-year-old is set to join the broadcast booth as CBS' lead football analyst starting next season.
