NFL player names that belong in a spelling bee

The finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee take place Thursday night and, in honor of the competition, we've compiled a list of the hardest names to spell in the NFL.

There is no trophy or $40,000 cash prize on the line, but anyone able to ace the spellings of these names would certainly earn our respect.

Name: Michael Hoomanawanui (Hoh-oh-mah-NAH-wah-NOO-ee)
Origin: American of Maori and Hawaiian descent
Definition: New Orleans Saints tight end

This Saints tight end gives play-by-play broadcasters a test every week. Hoomanawanui has carved out a respectable seven-year career and ranks third on New Orleans' depth chart.

Name: Charmeachealle Moore (Sure-MIKE-you-well)
Origin: American
Definition: Los Angeles Chargers linebacker

Moore shares his first name with his father, but does not know its origins. He's been told his grandmother "just came up with it," according to ESPN's Jake Trotter. The Chargers signed Moore as an undrafted free agent after the 2017 NFL Draft.

Name: Owamagbe Odighizuwa (Oh-wah-MAH-bay Oh-DIGGY-zoo-wah)
Origin: American of Nigerian descent
Definition: New York Giants defensive end

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Odighizuwa lived in Nigeria for five years during his youth before moving back to the U.S. He's entering his third season as a member of the Giants' defensive line.

Name: Ndamukong Suh (In-DOM-a-kin SOO)
Origin: American of Jamaican and Cameroonian descent
Definition: Miami Dolphins defensive tackle

Suh's name translates to "House of Spears" in the Ngemba language of Cameroon. It's apropos for one of the most ferocious defensive tackles in the game.

Name: Laurent Duvernay-Tardif
Origin: French-Canadian
Definition: Kansas City Chiefs guard

A Canadian university star, Duvernay-Tardif signed a rich five-year, $42-million extension with the Chiefs in February.

Name: Halapoulivaati Vaitai (Hal-lah-poo-li-VAH-tee Vie-tie)
Origin: American of Tongan descent
Definition: Philadelphia Eagles tackle

Would you believe the 2016 draft pick has twin brothers with the names Kevin and William?

Name: Ben Roethlisberger
Origin: American of Swiss descent
Definition: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback

Big Ben's surname, which also has German roots, has graced many a burger since his rise to fame.

Name: Tanoh Kpassagnon (Twan-oh pass-N-yo)
Origin: American of Ugandan descent
Definition: Kansas City Chiefs defensive end

The Chiefs used their second-round draft pick on the defensive end out of Villanova. At 6-foot-7 with long arms, he boasts supreme size and athleticism.

Name: Yannick Ngakoue (IN-gah-kway)
Origin: American
Definition: Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end

The 2016 third-round draft pick burst onto the scene with an eight-sack rookie season. He'll now be paired with Calais Campbell and Dante Fowler Jr. to elevate the Jaguars' defense to even greater heights.

Name: C.J. Fiedorowicz (Feh-DOR-uh-wits)
Origin: American
Definition: Houston Texans tight end

Fiedorowicz enters the season as the Texans' top tight end after breaking out with a 559-yard, four-touchdown campaign last year.
