Relatives of NFL stars Bortles, Cousins taken late in MLB draft

Jerome Miron / USA TODAY Sports

Kirk Cousins and Blake Bortles are both starting quarterbacks - of varying success - in the NFL. Instead of following in their footsteps, a pair of relatives have elected to pursue careers in baseball.

Cousins offered congratulations on Twitter to his ... cousin ... Jake Cousins, a pitcher out of Pennsylvania, when the Washington Nationals drafted him 613th overall in the 20th round Wednesday. Kirk joked that D.C. has enough room for another person bearing the family name.

Jake posted a 3.15 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings in his final season at Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, Bortles' younger brother Colby, a third baseman from Ole Miss, was drafted in the 22nd round by the Detroit Tigers. He hit .269 in 55 games this past season.

Neither is a lock to be signed by their respective teams, though late-round draft picks will occasionally turn out to be diamonds in the rough.
