Browns QB coach: Game performance will determine depth chart

Ken Blaze / USA TODAY Sports

If you're looking for the Cleveland Browns to name their starting quarterback, you'll be waiting until at least Aug. 10 - the date of their first preseason game.

Browns quarterback coach David Lee said he's been impressed thus far by the progress of his three potential starters - Brock Osweiler, Cody Kessler, and rookie DeShone Kizer - through OTAs and minicamp, but said the team needs to see them in game action to determine how they really stack up against one another.

"We are competing, but as far as coming along and trying to line them up, we are still a long way from that," Lee told his team's website Thursday. "I have been coaching quarterbacks for 43 years, and you have to get them to a game.

"You have to put people in the stands and in pressure situations and then we can rank them one, two, three, four a whole lot easier."

All three quarterbacks took snaps with the first-team offense throughout minicamp, which may continue once training camp opens.

One anonymous Browns player said he wouldn't be surprised if Osweiler came into camp as the starter, while Lee did say the returning Kessler has the best grasp of the offense. Meanwhile, Kizer is thought to be the eventual franchise quarterback, but Lee said Thursday he's not ready to call the rookie starter-ready.
