Bell not expected to report for start of Steelers camp

When the Pittsburgh Steelers open training camp Thursday, not every player is expected to be in attendance.

Running back Le'Veon Bell still hasn't signed his $12.1-million franchise tender, so it would be a shock if he shows up, as several analysts have noted.

The deadline for signing a long-term deal has passed, so Bell has little to gain by reporting. He can't be fined for his absence because technically he isn't under contract until he signs his tender.

It's common for players in Bell's situation to stay away from their team for some or all of training camp and to instead work out on their own, where the risk of injury is much less significant.

Bell is tentatively expected to sign and report in time to play Week 1.
