The Atlanta Falcons had hoped to have signed running back Devonta Freeman to an extension by Thursday. That deadline has passed, but negotiations are still ongoing.

The team and player are still discussing a five-year extension that would make Freeman one of the highest-paid players at his position, according to Michael Silver of the NFL Network.

After three seasons, Freeman has become one of the league's most dependable backs. He may share duties with Tevin Coleman, but he has produced back-to-back 11-touchdown, 1,000-yard seasons on the ground.

Freeman has spoken extensively this offseason of his desire for a new deal. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract and is set to hit free agency in 2018.
