The New York Jets claimed defensive end Kony Ealy off waivers after he was released by the New England Patriots on Saturday, the team announced.

The Patriots traded for Ealy in March, though they didn't give up much draft capital to acquire him. In three preseason games with the Patriots, Ealy made one tackle.

Ealy will join cousin Sheldon Richardson with the Jets. Ealy was a second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2014, but struggled to find a role and be productive in their scheme. The 25-year-old could be moved to outside linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 system or be used as a rotational player on the defensive line.
