Fantasy: Waiver Wire - Week 5
Every Tuesday during the season, theScore's NFL editors run down the recommended waiver wire pickups.
Ownership percentages are based on Yahoo! leagues. FAAB bids are set at a $100 budget.
Quarterback
Deshaun Watson, Texans
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Chiefs | 34% | $12 |
Clearly, Watson is the real deal. If what he did against the Patriots two weeks ago wasn't enough proof for you, how about his record-setting five-touchdown (four passing, one rushing) performance in Week 4? He's still a rookie, and there will surely still be bumps in the road, but Watson is the quarterback you want to target on the waiver wire this week.
Jared Goff, Rams
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Seahawks | 22% | $3 |
What a difference a coach can make. Now freed from Jeff Fisher's stale philosophies, the former No. 1 overall pick is thriving under Sean McVay. Temper your expectations a bit with the Seahawks up next, but Goff is certainly on the radar as a QB2 and possible starter in deep leagues.
Running Back
Alvin Kamara, Saints
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
Bye | 46% | $40 |
Still unowned in a shockingly high number of leagues, Kamara is this week's top add wherever available. It's clear that Sean Payton loves his rookie - and it's also clear that Adrian Peterson is rapidly falling out of favor while Mark Ingram is merely a replacement-level talent. The Saints have a bye this week, but afterward could feature Kamara (who caught all 10 of his passing targets in Week 4) in an even bigger role. It's not out of the question that he'll become a true lead back by November.
Latavius Murray, Vikings
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Bears | 17% | $30 |
Dalvin Cook is out for the year with a torn ACL, which means free-agent signing Latavius Murray is next man up in Minneota. Murray is far less dynamic than Cook, and there are reasons for concern about the fading Vikings offense, but the former Raiders rusher is worth a sizable bid purely for the volume he should see. Remember, too, that Jerick McKinnon remains in the mix and could have some deep FLEX value purely based on passing-down work.
Thomas Rawls, Seahawks
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Rams | 29% | $10 |
Chris Carson has a broken bone in his leg and will miss an extended period of time, if not the rest of the season. Accurately forecasting which Seahawks rusher will take Carson's place as the starter isn't be easy (which is why all three candidates are included on this list), but the good news is it probably won't be the most important decision fantasy owners make this year. A timeshare is likely, which could mean none of the trio is a viable fantasy option. For now, though, Rawls looks like he'll get first crack at being the starter (at least in title, if not in number of carries), based on Pete Carroll's comments.
Eddie Lacy, Seahawks
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Rams | 19% | $10 |
With Rawls inactive in Week 4, Lacy took over for the injured Carson and notched 52 yards on 11 carries against a weak Colts defense. The formerly portly tailback will probably need Rawls to fall flat on his face to have any consistent fantasy value.
C.J Prosise, Seahawks
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Rams | 16% | $5 |
Far more of a receiving threat than Rawls or Lacy, Prosise was injured in Week 4 but is expected to return against the Rams. He has the highest upside of this trio, but staying healthy has been a major problem for him. Considering Prosise will likely come cheapest on the waiver wire, he should perhaps be the Seahawks running back that fantasy owners zero in on.
Alex Collins, Ravens
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Raiders | 10% | $10 |
Collins broke out for 82 yards on nine carries in Week 4, including a 50-yard run during which he looked like a better player than Terrance West, whom the Ravens presumably want Collins to replace. The problem is that Collins also fumbled, something that's been a problem for him dating back to college. If he can hold onto the ball, Collins could seize a workhorse role in Baltimore. Don't bet all your FAAB on it, though.
D'Onta Foreman, Texans
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Chiefs | 28% | $5 |
Foreman rushed 13 times for 45 yards against the Titans in Week 4 and remains purely a handcuff to Lamar Miller.
Wendell Smallwood, Eagles
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Cardinals | 58% | $5 |
A popular add last week, Smallwood then watched as a revitalized LeGarrette Blount outgained him on slightly fewer snaps in Week 4. If Smallwood is still available in your league, he's worth adding purely because he should continue seeing work, but Blount is the Eagles rusher you really want.
Wayne Gallman, Giants
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Chargers | 3% | $5 |
With Paul Perkins and backup Orleans Darkwa banged up, the rookie Gallman got some run in Week 4 and may have looked like the best Giants rusher all season - though that isn't saying much. Gallman is a middling prospect, but he's worth adding in deep leagues purely because of the possibility he remains ahead of Perkins.
Elijah McGuire, Jets
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Browns | 2% | $3 |
McGuire rushed 10 times for 93 yards and one touchdown against the Jaguars in Week 4, while adding 38 yards through the air. But can you really count on anyone in the Jets' offense?
Wide Receiver
Will Fuller, Texans
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Chiefs | 32% | $12 |
Fuller is the best of a somewhat uninspiring group of waiver wire receivers this week. In his first action of 2017 in Week 4, he matched his rookie touchdown total of two. He's still mostly a deep threat, and is clearly behind DeAndre Hopkins in the pecking order, but Fuller at least offers upside that several others on this list don't.
Devin Funchess, Panthers
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Lions | 25% | $10 |
Funchess scored twice in Week 4, which begs the question: Is he emerging as Cam Newton's preferred weapon or is the Patriots' defense just that bad? Funchess has seen 19 targets over his past two games, so the volume is definitely there, but let's see if he can score against a better defense before we get too excited.
Tyler Lockett, Seahawks
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Rams | 42% | $4 |
Slowed by injury early in the season, Lockett is now playing the majority of passing snaps in Seattle and Russell Wilson is looking his way. Doug Baldwin remains the clear No. 1 target in this offense, but Lockett's athletic upside makes him worth an add.
Cooper Kupp, Rams
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Seahawks | 43% | $4 |
Kupp gets the Seahawks next, which remains a tough matchup. But the way to attack Seattle's secondary is in the slot, where Kupp does most of his damage. If you believe in this Rams passing attack, the rookie receiver is certainly worth a modest bid.
Josh Doctson, Redskins
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
Bye | 11% | $1 |
Doctson is merely a bench stash for deep leagues, but his upside makes him someone to keep an eye on.
Mike Williams, Chargers
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Giants | 7% | $1 |
Like Doctson, Williams is only worth adding as a speculative stash in deep leagues.
Tight End
Evan Engram, Giants
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
vs. Chargers | 46% | $6 |
Brandon Marshall looks washed up, which has led to Engram's emergence as the Giants' possession receiver - a valuable complement to Odell Beckham Jr. in one of the NFL's most pass-heavy offenses. The rookie should be owned in all leagues.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Jets
Next Up | Ownership | FAAB bid |
---|---|---|
at Browns | 7% | $1 |
Perhaps a better real-life story than fantasy prospect, Seferian-Jenkins beat alcoholism, worked his way into the mix in New York, and has seen 10 targets in two games played this season. With a dream matchup against the Browns on tap, ASJ is a streaming option this week.
