Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith pleaded not guilty Friday to felony assault charges stemming from a July 4 incident with his sister's boyfriend, TMZ Sports reports.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said in August that Smith beat the victim and then stomped on the man's head.

Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said Smith "was defending his sister."

Smith signed a four-year, $28-million contract with the Raiders as a free agent in March 2016.

If convicted, Smith faces up to seven years in prison.
