Miami Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso is halfway to his goal of raising $150,000 for areas of Miami and Puerto Rico after they were affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria in recent weeks.

After Hurricane Irma made landfall in the state the Dolphins call home and Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, Alonso opened a crowdfunding account to raise money for recovery efforts, and donations have totaled more than $75,000.

Alonso has been a member of the Dolphins for the past two seasons and his father grew up in Puerto Rico.

"I have always held the people in my current community of Miami and in the Puerto Rican community near to my heart," Alonso wrote on his crowdfunding page. "With people in both places being left with virtually nothing, I am asking all of you to help me ease their hardship. Both communities are full of people I call friends and family, and all of the people in each community deserve our help."

The effort comes on the heels of Houston Texans star J.J. Watt's campaign which raised $37 million for flood relief in Houston.
