Report: Jerry Jones would only face potential fine, legal fees if he sues NFL

Jerry Jones would only be subject to a potential fine and the prospect of paying for legal fees for both sides if he moves ahead with his plan to sue the NFL and its compensation committee, an unnamed team owner told Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Jones has tried to stand in the way of the committee's efforts to finalize a contract extension for Roger Goodell that would keep the commissioner in office until 2024.

"If he files a lawsuit, he could be subject to attorney fees and maybe a fine," the team owner said.

On Wednesday, it was revealed the NFL sent a letter to Jones' attorney urging the Dallas Cowboys owner to drop his litigation threats. Jones is not, however, at risk of losing his franchise.

"I don't know where this is coming from about stripping him of his franchise," the owner said. "That's ridiculous. That's not going to happen."
