Report: Foster's arrest came after he physically dragged girlfriend during argument

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster's arrest on charges of domestic violence - as well as suspicion of possessing an assault rifle - stemmed from his girlfriend saying that he physically dragged her during an argument Sunday, sources familiar with the investigation told Robert Salonga of The Mercury News.

Foster's girlfriend of several years told police dispatchers during a 911 call that he owned multiple semiautomatic rifles, leading to police recovering one firearm, a SIG Sauer 516 short-barreled rifle, added Salonga.

The woman was injured during the altercation, but the extent of her injuries wasn't released.

The 2017 first-round draft pick was released from police custody late Sunday evening on $75,000 bail. He met with 49ers officials Monday and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that "no quick resolution" is expected regarding any investigation into the incident.

Foster was also arrested and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana on Jan. 12.
