Report: Cardinals expected to release Adrian Peterson; could bring him back

USA TODAY Sports

The Adrian Peterson era in Arizona appears to be nearing an end, or at least an intermission.

The Cardinals are expected to release Peterson on Monday, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Peterson is due a bonus of $750,000 on Friday, the third day of the new league year, if he's on the roster. The Cardinals could, however, re-sign Peterson later, Schefter's source said.

The 32-year-old compiled 448 rushing yards and two touchdowns in six games with the Cardinals, while being used as one of several running backs to replace an injured David Johnson. He averaged 3.5 yards per carry and added 66 yards through the air on nine receptions.

He missed the final five games of the season, as the Cardinals placed him on injured reserve due to a neck injury suffered in Week 12.

Peterson was signed by the New Orleans Saints last offseason to a two-year deal worth a total of $7 million. He ended up stuck behind Pro Bowler Mark Ingram and Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara in the backfield timeshare and carried the ball just 27 times over four games, going for 81 yards and no touchdowns.

He was traded to the Cardinals following Week 4 in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2018 draft. The pick will be the 189th overall selection.
