Report: Khalil Mack absent from Raiders' offseason workouts
New Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden couldn't wait to get his players in the building for the beginning of the offseason workout program, but he was down one notable player Monday.
Pass-rusher Khalil Mack was not in the building, team sources informed NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Mack is entering the final season of his rookie contract on a fifth-year option that will pay him $13 million.
The team and player "weren't close" on early extension talks, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Attendance at the offseason workout program is voluntary. The three-phase program begins with two weeks of strength, conditioning, and rehab. The workouts will be followed by a voluntary minicamp beginning April 24 and OTAs in May.
Mack was the league's Defensive Player of the Year in a 2016 campaign which also brought first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl accolades. He was a Pro Bowler again last season.
