Report: J.J. Wilcox plans to sign with Jets after backing out of 49ers move
Free-agent safety J.J. Wilcox evidently had a case of cold feet Tuesday.
After meeting with the San Francisco 49ers, the defensive back reportedly intended to sign a one-year deal with the club. However, he had a last-minute change of heart and is currently en route to pen a contract with the New York Jets, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter's sources, Wilcox "got stage fright" after visiting the 49ers’ facility, and decided he wanted to play for Jets head coach Todd Bowles. He'll now join New York on a one-year deal.
Wilcox signed a two-year, $6.25-million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last offseason, but was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of Week 1. The hard-hitting safety accumulated 12 tackles and one interception in a sub-package role for the Steelers in 2017.
