Kam Chancellor appears to announce retirement

Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor appeared to confirm that he's retiring from the NFL on Sunday.

The venerated defensive back tweeted out an explanation for his decision.

Chancellor was mulling over retirement throughout the summer after he suffered a season-ending neck injury during the 2017 campaign.

The 30-year-old was named to four Pro Bowls over the course of his career, establishing himself as one of the NFL's most dangerous open-field hitters. Chancellor served as a fundamental piece of Seattle's vaunted secondary, nicknamed "The Legion of Boom", alongside Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas, helping the team capture Super Bowl XLVIII.

Seattle is expected to face a major transition after Sherman, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, and Jimmy Graham, among others, either left the team or retired this offseason. Chancellor's apparent retirement will make that transition even more challenging.

The Seahawks have yet to release a statement.
