Patriots release WR Malcolm Mitchell
The New England Patriots released wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell Monday.
Mitchell did not play last season after battling a recurring knee injury, and it appears the Patriots did not feel comfortable with his health. The team attempted to trade the young pass-catcher this offseason, but ultimately failed, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The former Georgia standout was placed on injured reserve list prior to Week 1 in 2017, but was only recently cleared to return to training camp. He underwent a procedure on his knee last month.
New England selected Mitchell in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He had a strong rookie season when he caught 32 passes for 401 yards and a touchdown, helping the Patriots win Super Bowl LI.
Mitchell's release also comes shortly after the signing of veteran receiver Eric Decker, who could see significant snaps alongside Chris Hogan while Julian Edelman serves his four-game suspension.
