The New York Giants announced that outside linebacker Olivier Vernon has been ruled out of the team's Week 1 tilt with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Vernon has been dealing with a high ankle sprain he suffered Aug. 26 during practice. He is listed as week to week.

New York's top pass-rusher was initially carted off the field after suffering the injury, so there was concern that it was more serious, but X-rays came back negative shortly after.

Vernon accumulated seven sacks and two forced fumbles for the Giants last season. He was shifting from defensive end to outside linebacker under new defensive coordinator James Bettcher in 2018.

Rookie third-rounder Lorenzo Carter and recent free-agent addition Connor Barwin will see significant snaps in Vernon's place Sunday.
