The Arizona Cardinals have signed running back David Johnson to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday.

Johnson's deal is worth $39 million, including $30 million in guarantees, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. He can earn up to $45 million through incentives.

The star running back will receive nearly $24 million upon signing and $28 million by March, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Johnson was entering the final year of his rookie contract and will now be the NFL's third-highest-paid running back in terms of average annual value.

The former third-round pick missed all but one game during the 2017 campaign after dislocating his wrist in the season opener. He was named an All-Pro in 2016, leading the league with 2,118 all-purpose yards.
