The Denver Broncos cut backup quarterback Chad Kelly on Wednesday after he was arrested on suspicion of first-degree criminal trespassing early Tuesday. Before the arrest, Kelly attended a Halloween party hosted by now-former teammate Von Miller.

Miller defended the team gathering Thursday and distanced himself from Kelly's actions.

"It was a private event, it was safe. I had team security there, I had my own private security there," Miller said, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.

Members of the Broncos, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings basketball teams, and Denver Outlaws lacrosse team attended the party Monday night.

Kelly was arrested after police received a call around 1 a.m. from a couple about a man who entered their Englewood, Co., residence, sat down on their couch, and began "mumbling incoherently", according to an affidavit.

"Of course, we got the news about Chad. I care about Chad as a person," Miller said. "The party was separate from his issues. I love the guy, I wish the best for him."
