Report: Alex Smith not a lock to return from leg fracture
Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is not certain to return to football after suffering a spiral fracture in his leg, though there's optimism he will be able to play again, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter added that doctors are "maintaining a wait-and-see attitude even though the Redskins believe he can make it back" from breaking both the tibia and fibula in his right leg in Week 11.
The Redskins said Smith will require six-to-eight months to recover, which would put him on course to be ready for either mandatory minicamp in May or training camp in July.
Colt McCoy is set to continue starting in Smith's absence.
Smith is under contract through the 2022 season after signing a four-year, $94-million extension following his trade from the Kansas City Chiefs this past offseason.
The quarterback's deal had $55 million guaranteed at signing and $71 million overall, so if the worst-case scenario comes to pass and he can no longer play, the Redskins could face some serious cap issues.
